Roger Federer met Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, at Wimbledon on the 18th anniversary of his five-set loss to Rafael Nadal in the 2008 final.
What happened?
The Duchess, Honorary President of the Lawn Tennis Association, greeted Federer, an eight-time Wimbledon champion, in the Royal Box.
Federer also said hello to Carole Middleton and Pippa Middleton, Kate’s mom and sister.
The first match they watched was Alexandra Eala of the Philippines against Jasmine Paolini of Italy.
Why it matters for Roger Federer
Federer is continuing a tradition of returning to Wimbledon each year since retiring from professional tennis in 2022.
The retired player attended the tournament with his wife last year and spent time with the Duchess.
What comes next?
Later, Arthur Fery, the last British player in the tournament, will play Grigor Dimitrov on Centre Court.
Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, wore a white blazer, floral broach, and layered necklaces to the tournament.
She also wore a bow pinned to her jacket with “LTA” on it, symbolizing her role as Honorary President.
King Frederik of Denmark took in the action yesterday, and the Princess of Wales, the Duke of Kent, and Lady Rose Gilman were all spotted during the first week.
The Duchess of Gloucester is among many royal attendees at Wimbledon this year so far.
Federer’s return to Wimbledon is a significant event, given his eight championships and lasting impact on the sport.
